Story
We are a bunch of guys who like kayaking, love an adventure - and are looking for a mid-winter challenge.
Who are 'we'? Jon Meredith, John Surridge, Tim & Victor Hulbert.
Back in 1913 public collections started for a charity then known as World-Wide Advent Missions. Times and focus has changed but 100 years later volunteers are still collecting for what is now the Adventist Development and Relief Agency.
Celebrating 100 years, between us we plan to kayak a total of 100 miles - heading down the stunningly beautiful River Wye from Ross to Monmouth (roughly 25 miles). All the guide books call this a two day trip but in the middle of winter, in the cold, and with limited daylight, we plan to achieve this in just one day.
You may think we are mad - but it's for a really good cause. While we have had much too much water in the UK these last months, in Burkina Faso there has been a dramatic shortage. We plan to help make a difference! To find out how, read on!
In many countries of Africa, women and children spend a large portion of their day carrying out the simple task of collecting water. In the dry season, the nearest source of water may be seven to ten miles away. If you are lucky, you might have a donkey that can help you on the return trip. Many others must gather only what they can carry on their head, and carefully walk the long distance home.
ADRA asked Iwaoga Ilboudo what her day entails: "Even then, the water that we brought home was not safe. It was filled with waterborne diseases. Our children would often get sick, and some would die, just from drinking water!
A couple of years ago, all of this changed when ADRA installed a borehole just a short distance from our village. Now we have plenty of pure, safe water for everything that we want to do. We use it for drinking, cooking, and bathing. But most importantly, our children are no longer getting sick! If they do get malaria, we can now give them as much water as they will drink, without the fear that the water might make them worse. We are so thankful to ADRA for giving us safe, pure, clean water for our children!"
Target date: 27 January 2013. Backup date, 10 February (subject to weather and river conditions).
