The challenge!
Elliot and I (Alice) along with my parents (Sarah, David) and my aunt (Juliet) are taking on the London to Brighton challenge, which involves walking 100km (62 miles) non-stop. The walk usually takes around 24-30 hours and we will be starting at around 7am on Saturday the 28th, so we will finish around midday on Sunday the 29th. We will be just stopping long enough to eat enough meals, but no sleep or true rest until we finish.
The walk will begin in Richmond park, through the streets and green spaces of London. Next onto to the hills of the north downs, and across the Weald to the south downs and eventually Brighton. We have already begun training, with 30km walks starting to become the normal weekend activity.
A few facts:
- Distance: 100km=100,000m=62.14miles=109361yards, or 2.37 marathons. For comparison: A gold Duke of Edinburgh challenge is typically around 96km, over four days, we have only one (and a bit).
- Climbing over the North and South Downs: the South Downs will be early in the morning having already walked 70km.
- Over 3000 participants, Walking, Jogging and Running
The Charity
We are walking to support Alzheimers Research UK: I have seen Alzheimer's and Dementia directly and indirectly affect my family and friends, and it honestly terrifies me; especially the possibility of it further affecting my family or someday myself. Over a third of people know some affected by dementia "24.5 million of us in the UK know someone affected by dementia" as a country with a population of 64.1 million. With an ageing population, this disease will unfortunately continue to affect more and more of the people we love and care about.
Alzheimer's Research UK help fund pioneering research that will make a real difference to people’s lives – now and in the future. Everything from brain imaging to assessing risk factors, and improving diagnosis, so people can get access to better care. Although there are no current that can slow or halt the progress of the diease, diagnosing dementia early is also important for research into new treatments.
