Story

"An investment in knowledge pays the best interest" - Benjamin Franklin

Here at GVI Laos we’re firm believers in education. It is a tool that will change the world and we believe if people have access to the tools to change their lives, not only will they use them, they'll teach others around them to do so as well.

That's what we do here at GVI Laos. We provide locals access to education and skills that they might otherwise never get the opportunity for.
This year, we need your help to raise funds to continue to provide sponsorships,  educational, medical and general support for Lao students.  For 5 days (teaching days Monday May 25th – Friday May 29th), in-country volunteers and staff will give alms to monks and novices.  Although this is something many volunteers elect to observe or take part in at least once during their project, our commitment to participating in 5 days of alms-giving is in line with local traditions; most locals, especially women, give food to the procession of passing Buddhist temple inhabitants every single day, with starts at early as 5am!

Laos is one of the world's poorest countries. The daily struggle to survive for many poor rural families is so extreme that sometimes they can't even afford to feed and clothe their own children. Often the only chance their kids have to break the cycle of poverty and famine is to receive an education. Sadly, many families can't afford the bus fare, uniforms, books, pens and pencils for their children to go to school. Some children can join a temple as a novice monk to receive an education. However there's only so much temples can provide before those children have to disrobe and look for menial work in larger cities, especially when their families are relying on them as a future source of income. Thankfully, organisations such as GVI can provide much needed funds to sponsor those novices, children, families and students so they can continue to provide for their communities and can continue to study, learn and grow.

Many young people in Laos today simply want the chance to get an education. They are dedicated, motivated students and strongly treasure their educations.

Give your money real value, invest in knowledge.

Khop Jai Lai Lai (thank you very much)
