Story
In 2008 we set ourselves the challenge of visiting all 92 Football League clubs to raise money for the St Vincent de Paul Society Children’s Camps. We are in the process of arranging the fourth and final leg, and on the 18th March we will set off to complete the 92 by visiting the clubs in League One, along with any teams that we have missed in previous years due to promotion and relegation. We will be travelling by car, and taking photos and videos to document our travels.
In previous years we have visited the Premier League, Championship and League 2 clubs with an overwhelming response, raising over £1000 each year.
This years’ challenge will be our biggest yet, involving 33 clubs and over 1600 miles, which we aim to complete in just four days, by driving for more than 10 hours each day. In addition to this, we set aside 15 minutes at each club during which time we hope to be allowed into the stadium for a quick photograph at pitch side. We will also take a photograph outside the ground to post online as we travel so that friends and sponsors can keep track of our progress.
The St Vincent de Paul Society is an international charity working to support those in need, and each summer they provide holidays for underprivileged children at 7 designated campsites across England. During these holidays, the children enjoy a variety of activities utilising the local facilities and beaches, fairs and theme parks where they are available, as well as sports, bowling, swimming, talent shows and discos. These camps are entirely staffed by adult volunteers like us, as is the upkeep of the purpose-built sites that the charity own. Attendance costs for the children are kept to a minimum as the volunteer helpers spend time fund-raising throughout the year and keep the camps debt-free.
In 2010 the SVP ran 7 camps across England, benefiting a total of 1452 children, supported by 591 voluntary staff. For the East Midlands, the SVP take children from Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire, last year this was attended by 78 boys, 81 girls and 42 deaf children, supported by 104 voluntary staff.
