Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
This page has been set up in memory of Peter Fitzgerald, an amazing husband, dad, granddad, brother, uncle, cousin, 'workmate' and friend.
Peter's story: Peter worked within the building trade from the age of 15, working long hours and night shifts in order to support and provide for his family. Unfortunately, through his sheer hard-work within the building industry, Peter was exposed to asbestos which led to him being diagnosed in March 2014 with a rare asbestos related lung cancer, Mesothelioma.
Following Peter's diagnosis, he went through a very difficult year, but he remained brave and strong keeping hopeful that treatment would help him. He had major surgery, chemotherapy, and took part in a clinical drug trial. Unfortunately, the treatment did not give us the results we were praying for, and after a year of putting up such a brave fight to this terrible disease, Peter passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on 15th April this year.Peter's wish: Peter agreed that flowers for his funeral, would be limited to immediate family only. His wish was for donations towards funding research into Mesothelioma.
About Mesothelioma: Mesothelioma is a very rare, terminal cancer and it does not have as much research and treatment options in comparison to some other cancers, due to the lower number of people diagnosed. As a result, the limited research and treatment options, in addition to the cancer being very aggressive, means that those diagnosed with Mesothelioma have a poor prognosis.
Asbestos related cancers are becoming more prominent, and the number of people being diagnosed with Mesothelioma is rising. There needs to be a significant increase in the research into this rare disease.
All donations, to the June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund, in memory of Peter, will be appreciated.
With lots of love,
The Fitzgerald Family xXx
