Story
I've been searching for a challenge for the past few years and on a night out in York, I decided to sign up for the London to Paris bike ride. Under the influence of a few too many pints, I registered and paid up there and then!
The ride will take in 300 miles of British and French countryside over a four day period, culminating in Paris on Sunday 18th September.
I have chosen to complete the ride in aid of Wakefield Hospice, a charity that provides amazing levels of support and care for people who have advanced active, progressive and life threatening illness.
Many of you may not know this but Emily’s Grandad, Howard Watson, was a founder member of the hospice, serving on the board of directors for many years.
Wakefield Hospice do incredible work on a daily basis, providing:
- An in-patient unit: en-suite rooms at Wakefield Hospice that cares for people whose symptoms are difficult to manage at home;
- Day therapy unit: support for adults, their carers and family members whose lives are touched by cancer or other life threatening illness;
- Bereavement support: support for the family and friends of people who have been known to Wakefield Hospice and who have sadly passed away;
- Education & Training: providing education and training for Wakefield hospice staff and volunteers.
On average, the hospice caters for over 300 in-patients and 1,800 day therapy attendances every year. No charge is made for care, so they rely on fundraising initiatives and the generosity of the community to help meet their annual running costs which exceed £3 million, of which over £2.3 million needs to be raised by voluntary contributions.
