In July 2013 my dad was diagnosed with cancer. He had a number of tumours in his neck. These were found to be secondary and the primary, despite extensive testing, was never discovered.
In October 2013 dad underwent major surgery to remove the tumours at the skilled hands of Mr Lancaster at Aintree hospital. 8 or 9 lumps were removed and dad began his road to recovery.
Over the next few months dad endured over six weeks of radio therapy and a visit from Steven Gerrard. He took it all in his stride showing the strength and humour that we have all come to expect from him.
Because of his strength and the skill of Mr Lancaster we were blessed with over 10 months with this special man that I am sure we would not have had.
Dad spent some special time with us all and built up some great memories that we will treasure forever.
In May 2014 two tumours came back (they were obviously as tough as him).
After being told that there was nothing more that could be done for him, dad faced this news with extraordinary strength that even surprised us. This strength helped all of our family cope in the face of this news. Over the next few weeks we built more special memories, taking a trip to the lakes. Even with his worsening health dad kept his strength and sense of humour, and filled our lives with love and smiles on a daily basis. He even enjoyed taking part in hide and seek with Oliver (the youngest addition to the Thompson family). He never, even in his weakest moments refused to play with his little monst (dad's pet name for his little monster, Oliver!)
Dad fought to stay strong in the face of these aggressive tumours, but was admitted to hospital on the 29th of May due to an infection.
Over the next few days, our family showed their best by pulling together to help dad. Despite his fighting spirit and strength, this infection was just too much and he fell asleep for the last time at 09.15 on Sunday 1st of June.
On behalf of my mum and all of the family I have set this up to honour the memory of Michael George Thompson and to express our thanks to Mr Lancaster and his team. Mr Lancaster never gave up, he was extremely thorough, and did everything he could to give us extra time and memories with our beloved husband/dad/grandad/great grandad/friend. We believe that Mr Lancaster went above and beyond his duties and at a time when the NHS is often criticised we have no complaints and only compliments in the way dad was treated by this particular department.
Rest in peace and, in your words, you have a great family. This is testament and a legacy of yours (and mums) parenting, strength and love that was unwavering throughout our lives. You will live on in us all.
LOVE YOU.
