On 1st October 2016 Tom and I will be venturing to Sri Lanka to embark on the challenge of a lifetime in aid of the charity Teens Unite.
After arriving in the capital of Colombo, we will be venturing across the South West of the island to complete a staggering 350km route on bicycles. On average we will be completing a distance of 60km per day as we travel through a land of misty highlands and tea plantations, dense jungles and national parks all to raise money for a worthy cause.
We are taking on the challenge to raise as much funding and awareness as we can for Teens Unite; the only UK charity to provide on-going support to 13-24 year olds fighting cancer from their diagnosis through to post-remission. The charity organises regular workshops and activities that bring the young people together so they can gain strength from each other, benefit from peer to peer interaction, rebuild their confidence and self-esteem and share their thoughts, feelings, hopes and fears with others their age who truly understand what they are going through.
With Teens Unite, a young person is supported throughout their fight against cancer, so they don't have to face the darker times alone.
Our mission is not only to complete the 350km journey but to also raise a minimum of £5,400 between us in the process.
Whilst this sounds a hefty sum we just wanted to let you know that Tom and I are each paying £1,350 for our travel and accommodation which you will eventually see on the donations page so it's really just £2,700 that we are aiming for between us for sponsorship and any extra that we may make between now and 1st October which will go directly towards Teens Unite.
Aside from all of this, most of you will know that I lost my brother Guy very sadly at the ridiculous age of 49 to bowel cancer nearly 7 years and then my father a year later. We also want to remember Stuart Brandon who died far too young from this dreadful disease and of course Sadie Rance who made it possible for Tom and I to realise Teens Unite actually existed. My daughter Charlie who is now 27 has also has a hard two years with various breast cancer issues and between Tom and I we have also lost a few other dear friends along the way ... but we have also supported friends who have 'got through it' and there are those who are in remission. Whatever, life is too short to quibble or quarrel about the silly little things that happen day to day between friends, family and on going daily events.
If you can give that would be totally fantastic and if for whatever reason you can't, then please don't worry, just give us a prayer and wish us on our merry way :).
If anyone knows of a good bike shop we definitely need to invest in protective gel padding for the derriers!!!!
Lots of love and thanks for reading this
