We support families of children with CHI to educate, socialise & continue research

Story

As some of you are aware my son William
who is 19-month-old  has congenital hyperinsulinsm (CHI) - meaning his blood sugar is constantly so low, he can suffer from dangerous low bloods at any time during the day or night . William requires  24hr care to keep him safe .
Just 1 in 50,000 children are diagnosed with the condition .
William's condition was unknown  until he was born five weeks early, weighing 9lbs 11oz.
He was born grunting, and doctors quickly checked his blood sugar and it was at just 0.7mmls - which is dangerous low .

Complications of Hyperinsulinism

"The most severe long term complication is brain damage. Even in the centers most experienced in treating children with HI, there are children who suffer permanent damage. For all children, the development of learning disabilities is difficult to predict and depends not only on the frequency of low blood glucose but also the duration of a hypoglycemic episode. In addition to learning disabilities, other neurological problems sometimes occur such as poor motor coordination, cognitive delays, or cerebral palsy. Strabismus (turned in eye), nystagmus (involuntary motions of the eye), or blindness may also be caused by hypoglycemia.

About the charity

The Children’s Hyperinsulinism Charity raises funds to support families living in the UK, Northern Ireland and Ireland who have children with Congenital Hyperinsulinism (CHI), a rare disorder affecting approx 1:50,000 in the UK. We will hold conferences to support each other and meet other families living with CHI which is so important. These conferences will also include education sessions presented by experienced families and medical professionals. We will also support research into different aspects of CHI including genetics, blood glucose, new medication and repurposed medication. Thank you for supporting The Children's Hyperinsulinism Charity (CHC).
