Thanks for reading this....
We decided to raise money for the Blonde McIndoe Centre at Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead over a period of time doing various fun things! The money raised so far was through a children's concert.
The next big thing is Phil running a 10k. Yes, you heard correctly. Phil is running. A 10k. He may be singing a little afterwards in the pub.
The serious bit....
The Blond McIndoe Research Foundation, the legacy of the world renowned plastic surgeon, Sir Archibald McIndoe is a centre of excellence in the field of wound healing with particular reference to the treatment of serious burns and children's scalds.
Many of our war veteran (pilots) were treated in East Grinstead & McIndoe used cutting edge techniques on some terrible injuries.
Our son Sam pulled a cup of hot water onto his arm & clavicle when he was 15 months old. He is still under the care of the staff at QVH and has had about 8 procedures since the accident including a fairly large skin graft.
His accident made us aware of how horrific scar tissue is. Some people have to deal with awful disfigurements & discomfort as a result of horrible domestic accidents, many of them children.
We also learned the hard way that it's pretty traumatic at the time.
It seems that awareness is very poor amongst educated parents about the dangers of scalding. How many cups of tea & coffee are made at the average NCT coffee morning? If we can do a little to help change this by highlighting the work done at QVH then another little person (and anguished parents) may not have to go through such a horrible time.
Sam's accident was pretty small on the grand scale of things but the quality of care he continues to receive is outstanding. Sam has been extremely lucky to be treated at QVH & although he'll have scars for life, we now all think they look pretty cool.
