Story
Our story began 35 years ago, although we didn't know it then! Back in 1981, as young, fit, 30 odd year olds Mum and Dad (Fred and Lorraine Wood) and a group of friends got together and planned a fundraising event to support the development of the brand new Coronary Care Unit lead by the legendary Dr Nayyar Naqvi at Wigan Infirmary.
Their fundraising activity of choice was a 23 mile sponsored walk from Southport to their local, The Moorgate Inn, Aspull, Wigan. With little preparation but plenty of camaraderie, grit and determination they completed the challenge raising £502, an impressive sum, during difficult times in the early eighties. The cheque was presented to Dr Naqvi himself and as a proud daughter the grainy black and white newspaper article found its way into my first and only scrap book at 8yrs old.
Fast forward 30 years and to our shock and surprise Mum was diagnosed with a serious heart condition which ultimately resulted in major heart surgery earlier this year. The kind, compassionate care and support provided by Dr Naqvi and his secretary Julie truly pulled Mum and our family through the most scary period of our lives.
Thankfully, Mum is now well on the road to recovery and we wanted to give something back as a token of her and our appreciation and thanks for the care and treatment that she received from her wonderful Dr.
We pulled out that old photo and thought what a more fitting way than 35 years on recreating the 1981 23 mile challenge, to raise funds for the Heartbeat 2 Appeal at Wigan Infirmary.
Dr Nayyar Naqvi’s Heart Beat 2 appeal has been raising funds for a new discharge lounge at Wigan Infirmary and almost all pieces are in place for the building to start. But an under-estimation of how much the facility will cost has meant the project is on temporary hold until extra funds can be raised.
