Help Derby's rough sleepers this winter!
Sonia and I (and several others from across the city) will be spending the night sleeping in a cardboard box outside Asda in Spondon from 7pm, 24th October to 7am, 25th October with the aim of raising money to give rough sleepers a meal and bed each night over this coming winter.
Last year, Derby's churches decided to do something in response to the council's cuts in provision for the homeless and hosted up to 35 people per night in one of seven churches across the city between December and March. Each night we provided our guests with a hot cooked meal, friendship, a place to sleep and breakfast before they left for the day. Over the 4 months, 7 days a week, we saw 240 different people come through the doors. In addition, the weekly advice center was able to help several of them in various ways to get off the streets and move on with getting their lives back on track.
This year the churches are coming together to again operate a Nightshelter. It will provide 35 beds per night, 7 days a week for 4 months; providing 75% of the beds in Derby for rough sleepers over this winter period.
Obviously there's a cost to this and we're raising money to provide for all the hot meals, paid overnight staff, sleeping bags, mattresses and transport of equipment between venues.
The Nightshelter is being coordinated by Derby City Mission and Asda have again welcomed us to an even Bigger sleepout than last year to raise money towards the costs.
Please donate to this worthy cause and help us bless the homeless this winter!
Thanks!!!
