30th August 2016. Done it! Two miles finished in 62 minutes and 23 seconds. More details and photos in my update section below!
On Saturday 27th August 2016 I will be attempting to raise money for Kidney Research UK by swimming two laps of a one mile course round the cold waters of Loch Lomond in Scotland. This swim is part of the Great Swim series (http://www.greatrun.org/great-swim/great-scottish-swim) and I chose it because my late Father lived nearby and Scotland is close to my heart. I am raising money for Kidney Research because my ten year old daughter Izzy has Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). At 24.5 miles long, Loch Lomond is Britain's largest inland stretch of water and the water temperature in August remains a chilly 12 or 13 degrees C.
This will be the first open water swim I have ever completed. It comes three years after being told by a surgeon that I was unlikely to be able to be able to swim front crawl again after an operation to stabilise a dislocated shoulder. In 2013 I was lucky enough to raise over £5000 for Kidney Research by climbing Ben Nevis (the highest mountain in the UK) for the first time (http://www.kidneyresearchukevents.org/AndyB0907BenNevis2012).
Kidney Research UK is dedicated to improving the understanding of kidney disease, its causes, prevention and treatment. They fund life-saving research into kidney disease, to improve the quality of life of those with kidney disorders and to increase public awareness of kidney health.
This important charity raises money to pay for research that will help kidney patients like my own daughter, Izzy Belton. She was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in 2009, and will need a kidney transplant in the next three years or so. She is currently ten years old.
Please help me raise vital funds for Kidney Research UK safely and securely by sponsoring me online!
If you are a UK tax payer, please remember to Gift Aid your contribution so Kidney Research UK can claim 25% extra on top of your donation. This makes a big difference to Kidney Research UK's work.
Many thanks for any donation you are willing and able to make. Your support could help to improve the health and lives of many people like Izzy.
Thank You and Stay Well!
Andy
