Story
So, why am I planning to have my head shaved on my 40th birthday?!
Well, I have thought for some time that I would like to do something meaningful on my birthday. I decided to have my head shaved to raise money for two charities which are close to my heart.
I have worked for several years now at Aquila Way in the Karis project. I work with 16-25 year old young women who are homeless, on their own and have pre-school aged children. I constantly feel challenged not to judge them by the way they look, their language, behavior and life choices but to look beneath to their heart; learning from their life experiences and supporting them to make positive changes .
Our friend Ian set up the Congo Children’s Trust after several visits to Lubumbashi, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Kimbilio project provides streetchildren with access to food and shelter, education and training. The ultimate aim being reconnection with their families and reintegration into society. Having worked mainly with boys, the project is now looking to start a work among girls who are being used asprostitutes nearby. The money I raise will help start this project.
I have been challenged by the recent changes in thebenefits system here in the UK and the way that those affected have been portrayed by both the press and government. What also upset me was reading comments on social media made by people who had no realunderstanding of the issues but had instead been influenced by what they read or heard. My faith teaches me that God looks past what we present to the world on the outside and into our heart, the real person inside. By having my hair shaved I am challenging my family, friends and the people I meet to see me for who I am and not what I look like. My hair will grow back but my heart for the people I care about will stay the same. Perhaps my action will also challenge others to think about how they see and treat others in society.
GOD said - “People judge others by what they look like, but I judge people by what is in their hearts.” 1 Samuel 16 v7 CEV
