The late Bob Scott's passion for bird conservation, especially in Africa, continues, thanks to the Bob Scott Appeal and generous support! In tribute to his life, Bob's widow Ann and friends launched an appeal to raise £25,000 for conservation projects in Africa to help trans-Saharan migrants. Previous donations amounting to £10,000 have made it possible for A Rocha Kenya (ARK), a charity working with local communities, to purchase an important bird habitat area within the Kenyan Dakatcha Forest. This area, acts as a resting stop-over for migratory species whilst a few also use it as an over wintering area. At times it supports almost 2,000 European Rollers. The Sokoke Scops Owl, an endangered species, has it's home there and it is vitally important for the endangered Clarke's Weaver being one of only two habitats in Africa for that species.
The Dakatcha Forest is under threat from felling and redevelopment for bio-fuel and pineapple plantations, this for short term financial gain. Thanks to Bob's Appeal many acres of land have now been purchased. A Rocha Kenya, Nature Kenya, BirdLife International and local communities will work together on the day to day forest and wildlife management. In addition local communities are being helped to live sustainably and encouraged to develop new sources of income without the need to degrade their surrounding natural environment. But there is still more to do and we'd love to make a further grant towards another African conservation project connected with halting the alarming decline in our own migratory birds by again providing habitat protection and restoration. Bob's passion is being tackled from the local to global level beginning with local communities along the migratory bird routes in Africa. With your help we can give birds and people a brighter future. Please dig deep and give generously. Many thanks - Ann Scott
