Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Hi, I'm Anya - I volunteer as one of 15 national Community Champions for a charity called Karma Nirvana who provide support to victims of Forced Marriage and Honour Based Abuse through their National Helpline and provide guidance and information to professionals, jointly risk assessing cases to protect lives.

- 12 'honour' killings are reported in the UK each year, but this is only the tip of the iceberg: many more cases will go unreported, or not be reported as being motivated by 'honour', or will occur abroad to UK nationals.

- Over 8,000 UK citizens will suffer Honour Based Abuse or be forced into Marriage each year.

- 2588 of 8268 calls that KN received in 2014 went unanswered due to cuts to funding that have meant that the national helpline has had its hours cut from 9am-9pm to 9am-5pm: this poses a great risk to those of school age.

- The MOJ reports that 54% of those forced into marriage are under the age of 17.

- The youngest case that the FM Unit has dealt with was 2 years old.

- The youngest victim supported by KN was just 5 years old.

From Monday 27th of April until Friday 8th May, I will wear chains around my ankles for 12 hours a day - to demonstrate the restriction felt by victims, and bring attention to that which goes unseen and unchallenged on a daily basis.

Please, please, please - if you can spare anything, it'll be so so appreciated. KN provides an essential lifeline to those at risk of this horrific abuse, as well as training professionals, police and schools as to how to deal with FM and HBV cases so that they get it right first time - and save lives.

Listening to survivors moved me to tears. Victims have suffered so much and sadly the issue of FM and HBA so often goes unchallenged, leaving victims isolated and in very real danger.

Thank you so so so so so much for any help you can give!!!!! :)
