9 years ago on 23rd May 2007, I lost my dad to acute myeloid leukaemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He was only 55 years old. Ironically, he was diagnosed with the same illness he spent so many years cycling and raising money for: The Doncaster Bikeathon, in aid of Leukaemia Research.
As a family, we decided it would be a fitting tribute to his memory if we continued with the cycling for charity theme, and since 2008 family and friends have been cycling the "Tigathon" to help raise money for Ward 18 at Doncaster Royal Infirmary (previously Ward 27).
Dad was only in hospital for 4 weeks until the illness took him from us so rapidly. Sister Blenkiron and all the staff were so fantastic and supportive and did their utmost to make him comfortable during the short time that he spent in isolation. It certainly opened our eyes up to the time, commitment and dedication that all of the staff on that ward gave day in day out to help and support the patients and their families.
Over the past 8 years, the money we have raised has helped to buy electric beds for isolation rooms, blood diffusion equipment and furnishings for staff, patients and their families.
With continued support and an incredible running total of almost £30K we have managed to help the staff on this ward achieve the best environment to provide patients the specialist care that they need and it is so fantastic to see.
I'm sure my dad would be very proud of us all.
