Story
Everyone has heard of the atrocities that have been happening to our Muslim brothers and sisters in countries like Syria and Palestine and I am sure most of you have also donated a lot of money to these war-torn nations. But when was the last time you heard about Yemen? Were you even aware of the humanitarian crisis in Yemen?
Yemen is the poorest of the arab nations and has been plagued by years of instability, poor governance, lack of rule of law and widespread poverty. After the Arab spring and the toppling of the long standing dictator Ali Abdullah Saleh disputes over the subsequent direction of the nation have degenerated into open warfare. After foreign militiary intervention in March 2015, the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer, declared: "Yemen after five months looks like Syria after five years".
It is now estimated that 4 out every 5 Yemenis need aid. More than 2.51 million people have been displaced internally and an additional 121,000 people have fled the country. An estimated 14.4 million are considered food insecure and an estimated 3 million people now require treatment or preventive services for malnutrition. 19.3 million from a population of only 26 million do not have access to safe drinking water.
This is a horrifying reality that most of us are totally ignorant about. Let us become the ummah that is like one body, where when one organ hurts and the whole body is affected. Lets spread the word and try to help Yemen that has so far been neglected.
