1. What are the basic senses?
There are five basic senses – visual, hearing, smell (olfactory), tactile and taste.
2. Are there any other senses?
There are two more senses one is vestibular the sense of balance and the other is proprioception which is a sense of how our bodies are positioned.
3. What is a Multi-Sensory Environment
It is a dedicated room that attempts to block out noise, control space, temperature, and lighting. It is an artificially created venue that brings together Multi-Sensory equipment in one place to stimulate the senses. This venue promotes pleasure and / or feelings of well-being. It can be utilized as part of learning, treatment, recreation and/or the relaxation experience.
4. What does Multi-Sensory equipment include?
Multi-sensory equipment include Lighting effects such as bubble lamps, spotlights, projectors etc.; Sensory activities such as play dough; Tactile experience with varied textured materials; Sound effects; selected rhythmical music; soft items on the floor such as mats, pillows or beanbags; different types of swings and other equipment for Vestibular and Proprioceptive stimulation.
5. Benefits of Multi-Sensory Environment
Time spent in a Multi-Sensory Environment has been shown to increase concentration, focus attention, improve alertness, awaken memories, and to improve mobilization, creativity, social relations and communications, and general awareness of the surrounding world.
6. Why school needs Multi-Sensory Room?
Increasingly, children with diverse special educational needs are being received into mainstream schools. There is a requirement to provide for these individual needs to ensure the children thrive in the mainstream environment.
Multi-Sensory Room can be used by all children to develop a variety of skills but which ultimately enriches the provision for children with special needs. The room has a variety of uses and benefits for all children.
