Brian Monckton Memorial Golf Days

Back in February 2009 we lost Dad to Bowel Cancer, and once I had got past the initial shock I decided that the best tribute to my Dad would be to make something good come from his passing. I must admit that until I had witnessed the work done by St Christopher's at first hand, I had not considered raising funds for an organisation that specialises in palliative care. However, the whole experience opened my eyes to the fantastic service they offer and all at no cost to the patient or their family.

Initially we were given all the help we needed to maximise the time Dad could stay at home with his family, but finally his situation deteriorated and he was admitted. This is where the staff at St Christopher's excel, they don't only offer care to the patient, they also extend their arm to the family as a whole. They made Dad's final few days as comfortable as possible, and they allowed us to stay with him 24/7. On a number of occasions we were given use of a private on-site apartment so we could stay in comfort overnight, and when that was not available, folding beds we provided. The staff were fantastic and you always got the feeling that they genuinely cared about the job they were doing and the people they were looking after.

It costs somewhere in the region of £14 million a year to maintain all the services currently offered by St Christopher's and only about a third of this is funded by the NHS. The remaining £9 million has to be sought from elsewhere, and this is why I decided to organise a golf day last year in Dad's memory. We had a fantastic day and raised a decent sum of money, so I decided to make it an annual event and we are not approaching our 4th year we are already have a decent core of regular participants it would be great to see some new faces. If you are interested in participating in this event, you can view full details at www.forebetter.co.uk
