Story
Hi and welcome to our fundraising page!
Our names are Cameron and Aaron Blackman (ages 9 and 7), and we are competing in the Kids’ Triathlon Series at Henley-on-Thames on 4th June 2016. Our aim is to raise as much money as we can for Dan’s Fund for Burns, which was set up by Mummy’s friend, Polly Miller, in honour of her late husband, Dan. We’re doing this as a family, so Mummy (age 39) is competing in the Sprint Triathlon on 5th June as well.
Polly and Dan had only been married for a few weeks when they were attacked in the 2002 Bali bombing. They were in a nightclub with a lot of their friends. When the bomb went off, the nightclub was destroyed. More than 200 people died. Polly was the only survivor of her group and although she got away, she ended up with 43% burns and was lucky to survive. She was also devastated to lose her husband and best friends. She spent a long time in hospital and had lots of operations, but found it hard to carry on with rehabilitation when she came out, as there was not a lot of support. Once recovered, she set up Dan’s Fund for Burns to make sure that other burns survivors had swift and practical access to help, support and further treatment once they leave Intensive Care. You can learn more about Polly’s story, Dan’s Fund for Burns and the amazing work they do here: www.dansfundforburns.org
Cameron’s triathlon (age 9-12 category) will be 50m swim,
2km cycle, 1km run. Cam’s strength is his cycling - he loves mountain biking and enjoys riding the trails at Peaslake and Swinley Forest.
Aaron’s triathlon (age 7-8 category) will be 25m swim, 1km
bike ride, 500m run. Aaron’s strength is his running – he is part of the school cross-country team, and plays rugby for Guildford RFC minis.
Mummy’s triathlon is a bit longer. She has a 400m swim, a
25km bike ride and a 5km run. While Mummy loves swimming and cycling, she hates running and so is looking forward to having us cheer her on for the final 5km!
She has no idea how long all of that will take (maybe all day?!) - but would like to finish within 1 hour and 50 minutes.
We’d really appreciate as much support as you can give for
this amazing charity.
