Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit Babies In Buscot Support's (BIBS) Giraffe Omnibed appeal JustGiving page.

BIBS are currently fundraising to supply a much needed Giraffe Omnibed for Buscot Ward, the neonatal and special care baby unit at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. This state of the art piece of equipment will improve the units ability to care for the most sick, vulnerable and small babies in the hospital.

Have you, a friend or a relative ever had a baby on Buscot ward? Ever thought that a box of chocolates didn't quite cut it when you left? Now's your chance to do something about it.

Together, we're saving tiny lives.

The Giraffe Omnibed is a full-featured incubator and a radiant warmer in one, there is just no other bed available to neonatal units like this.

It has become apparent that a number of incubators on Buscot Ward are now aging. These are very important pieces of equipment; in essence where the poorliest and smallest babies will live during the critical early stages of their lives. A sterile, temperature and humidity controlled environment that helps them develop and fight through their difficult start to life. Although still functional, a number of incubators do not offer the best level of care available to the smallest and sickest babies.

The unexpected birth of a premature or sick baby can happen to anybody. It pays no attention to race, religion or affluence. It can hit at any time, often with little or no warning or opportunity to prepare for what is happening. During this exceptionally stressful time, wouldn’t you want to know that your baby had the best equipment that money can buy? To give them the best chance, the best hope of not only survival but to lead a normal life against the odds?

One comment recently made by an ex-Buscot parent particularly sticks in my mind. “You never know if or when you will ever need Buscot Ward, but when you do need them, you really need them”.

This piece of equipment is needed now. Local sick and premature babies will see immediate benefits. With a price tag of £29,000 these incubators are by no means cheap, we will start with one for now but we would like to use this opportunity to start replacing and upgrading all of the older incubators currently in use within Buscot Ward.
