Story
Eh-oh! Thanks for taking a peek at my page :)
Mummy told me there's a very special day coming up soon, and friends are wondering what to get me. So I (with Mummy & Daddy helping a tiny bit!) set up this page to make it super easy for you to help me celebrate my first birthday!
I want to help 'Play Kenya' - a wonderful, caring charity who help children heal from physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. They support communities, to make a lasting difference to their children, and they have a specialised therapeutic safe house for sexually-abused girls under the age of 12.
The safe-house 'Rafiki Mwema' ('Loyal Friend') was born from the need to support and protect the many young girls who have been sexually abused: currently there's no other specialised care for these extremely vulnerable children. Rafiki Mwema help these little girls make sense of the horrors that have happened to them, give them access to medical treatment, support them through the court system, introduce them to education, and hopefully work towards a safe, supported return home (providing the accused perpetrator is not still there) or a specialised foster family.
They need our help to keep this desperately-needed project a reality: they continually need to employ well trained staff who can improve the lives of these children; and they need the essentials that every home takes for granted – to be able to feed them well, and keep them warm and dry.
Thank you for every single donation, we appreciate them all. Mummy says she will print all of them out and put them into a special book for me to look at when I'm older, so if you want to leave a birthday message, please do <3
Extra info about the charity, for anyone who wants to read more! -
{They work with families to help them understand that the children are not to blame for what has happened. They will work with the mothers and teach them the skills needed to continue the emotional support of their child, and will always be available for on-going support if needed. When returning home is not an option, Rafiki Mwema will work toward a safe foster family (who understand the child’s needs and difficulties).
As an organisation, Play Kenya is devoted to supporting emotionally damaged children through therapeutic play. We believe that play is the natural language of children so this is the media we use.
We need to continue to train and employ very special staff. We have very high expectations from the women who will care for these children and will hand pick carefully to ensure as close to a family atmosphere as we can create.
All our staff will have to complete the Attachment Play Programme training, receive training on Emotional First Aid and have access to their own counselling. They will be closely monitored and supervised at all times.}
