Story

Children all over the world love to listen to stories and read books. To help raise money for library books for children in South Africa, I decided to celebrate my birthday with a special evening of international poetry and Chilean guitar music.

Books For Life is sponsored by Catherine Ann Lombard and Nthabi Mohlakoana, board member of Breadline Africa.  The Enschede Library is hosting this event.

“I’m a writer and have always loved reading,” explains Catherine, "what better way to celebrate my life than helping the younger generation to discover the world of books!” Catherine will turn 60 in March, and she is hoping to raise the same amount of money as her year of birth – $1955,

Breadline Africa is a South African based NGO that works with young disadvantaged children. They specialise in renovating disused shipping containers and recycling them for essential community purposes. Renovated containers have been transformed into educare centres, libraries and media centres in schools, as well as community kitchens to serve food to the very poor, ablution blocks and sports club changing rooms. Since, 1993, they have provided over 250 containers to poverty stricken communities.

“As a little girl growing up in South Africa,” reflects Nthabi, “reading often helped me to escape to a world where I could be free and be whatever I wanted to be. I know that the books bought with money raised from this event will open doors and possibilities for many South African children”.

On 19 March, children and adults will be reading poetry in Dutch, Hindi, Zulu, English, Persian, Italian, Spanish, Chinese and more! Ivan Vargas will be providing entertainment with Chilean guitar music. Nthabi will also present information about Breadline Africa. All are welcome to join and participate. Please join us at the Enschede Library, starting at 20:00. Suggested donation is €10.

However, if you are too far away, please consider joining us in spirit with a contribution. Donating through this website is simple, fast, and totally secure. You details are safe, and the money, less 5% for the processing, will be sent directly to Breadline Africa.

If you prefer, you can also go directly to BreadlineAfrica.org and donate there.
