We need your help to build a specialist intensive care unit to help ponies, horses, donkeys or mules who are so weak when they come into our care that they need a safe environment to help them get better!
Many times, we have taken in extreme neglect cases, which have involved horses that are so weak they are unable to even stand. This is extremely dangerous for an equine as lying down for prolonged periods of time puts pressure on the internal organs, distorting and straining them. This is the reason that equines are able to sleep stood up by ‘locking’ their legs. When a pony enters our care, that needs intensive care, our staff work around the clock to tend to their needs – this might involve lifting the pony at regular intervals to ensure their internal system remains healthy. This is no easy task and even a small pony weighing just 80kg requires a team of four people to lift it to its feet. We have also treated many animals whom after being sedated for veterinary treatment, become extremely confused and disoriented as they come round from the anaesthesia. It is not uncommon for them to fall against the sides of their stable and injure themselves as they regain consciousness.
Owing to this, we are looking to build a specialist intensive care unit comprising of two stables. The stables will have padded walls to ensure the safety of weak or uncoordinated animals, and specially designed ‘slings’ to enable us to safely lift a weak pony to its feet. These pictures give an example of the type of unit we wish to build. A project like this is not cheap and we would massively appreciate your help to undertake this work, which is urgently needed!
