Story
My brother passed away prematurely aged 47 on December 20th 2012 which devastated his entire family. He had been diagnosed with Bowel Cancer shortly after he had completed the London Marathon in May 2011.
Clive and I had originally bought new road bikes after he was diagnosed and planned to ride to Italy together in 2012 as a way of helping him stay fit and focused whilst he coped with his cancer treatment. Unfortunately his health declined later that summer, and we did not manage to complete the ride.
In Clive's memory, along with my friends and family, I am now going to attempt that 2,000 mile bike ride from London to Rome, beginnning on September 8th 2013.
And for a grand finish, we have a grand moment, Clive's son, ETHAN, will ride the last 75 mile stage into Rome with me on his fathers bike. There won't be a dry eye on the tour that day I can tell you.
I have amazing friends and family, ALEX COOK, GRAHAM STOKES, NEIL GRAVER, GRANT WOODTHORPE, STEPHEN LEE, DOMENICO AVELLINI, ANGIE CRUISE, STUART COOK, SIMON SPONG, MIKE STAVELEY, ROGER WEBB & DARREN HEATLEY have all put time aside to train and then to cycle alongside me for various stages of the 2,000 miles to Rome to assist in raising money and keep me motivated.
They will all particpate on the London to Dover leg (90 miles), Alex Cook will join me for the first few stages into France and Belgium, Graham Stokes then takes over the baton pushing on for three days into Luxembourg and Germany, Neil Graver joins me for a couple of days in Tuscany, whilst Grant Woodthorpe will be with me for the last week into Rome.
It would be impossible to do it without proper support, the tour support vehicle containing food, luggage and spare bike parts will be driven by my father in law PETER KEANE, my amazing and enormously understanding wife DOMINIQUE GOLLEDGE, DOMENICO AVELLINI, my parents GEORGE AND VAL GOLLEDGE and finally... SIMON SPONG.
We will all be raising money for Bowel cancer UK, who aim to save lives and improve the quality of life for all those affected by bowel cancer, you can support me and all of the team mentioned above by donating on this page.
You can follow the ride on my daily update blog, click here: http://brettgolledge.blogspot.co.uk/ which will include maps, pics and plenty of stories, I'll try to keep it amusing.
