Story

Hello and thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page :)

This year I decided to set myself a personal challenge to run the Cork City marathon in June, fundraising for Student Action for Refugees.

There are over 100,000 refugees in the UK. Many have escaped from traumatic situations in their homeland with not much more than the clothes on their back, little to no English, and often not knowing where their friends and family are, or if they're even alive. On top of that, they have to get through the UK's horrendous Asylum process and find their feet in a completely new society where they know nobody.

I can tell you from experience that finding your feet in a new country is no walk in the park, and that's as a white-skinned English speaker who had a bit of money and a few friendly faces to get me started - I can't even imagine what it would be like as a refugee!

STAR is a nationwide charity that mobilises student volunteers to welcome and help refugees settle into the UK. By providing services such as English conversation classes, homework clubs for young refugees going through school and help with startup stuff, STAR not only helps build the skills and knowledge required to have a chance here, but also provides friendly faces and makes people feel welcome.

STAR is also super efficient, as they only have 3 staff, with a network of over 10,000 volunteers. The organisation is active on ~30 campuses, with the central charity advising the student-run groups on most effective services, best practice, provision of supporting materials, etc. With the number of asylum applications rising dramatically in the past few years, demand for their services is likely to substantially increase over the coming years.

Thank you for your support!
