We work in rural Uganda to transform lives in the local community

Story

50 litres of water per person per day is the United Nation's minimum requirement to ensure basic needs are met and few health concerns arise.

The average distance women in Africa travel to collect water is 6 kilometers and they can only collect a fraction of what they need.

I am therefore proposing to run 6km carrying 50 litres of water as fast as I can.

I will be volunteering in Uganda for 4 months on a Water Sanitation and Hygiene programme in the rural district of Bulambuli in Eastern Uganda. There is no shortage of water in Uganda however the accessibility and cleanliness of it is a major problem. Easily avoidable diseases seriously affect peoples everyday lives. The programme involves constructing wells and latrines but more importantly educates local people on the importance of clean water and hygiene.

As part of the placement I am raising money for the African Village Support (AVS) charity to help the good work continue as the programme ends this year. This continuation and dissemination of the knowledge gained over the last several years is crucial to ensure the good work is not wasted and the goal of clean, plentiful water for all continues.
