We build electric eco-fences in Africa to protect Africa's threatened ecosystems

Story

Dear Friends!!!

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page. We are once again participating in the Rhino Charge, an extreme Motor Sports event in the Kenyan Bush, which raises money to protect Rhino, Elephant and other wildlife as well as the most valuable of natural resources such as forests and natural water towers. Please click on the “Read more” link below if you want to know more about The Cause, The Event or The Team.

The cause
We do this to support Rhino Ark (and have fun doing so in the process). Rhino Ark's mission is to develop sustainable solutions to the challenges facing mountain forest ecosystems and threatened biodiversity areas, The funds raised support both the endowment fund for the maintenance of the electrified fence around the Aberdare, which was the fence build with funds raised through the first 24 years of the Rhino Charge, and new fences around Mt. Kenya National Park and blog 22 of the Mau forest.

Both Mt. Kenya and blog 22 of the Mau Forest are, like the Aberdares, essential natural water towers for Kenya and therefore a small, but important, part of saving the planet.

These fences are essential in, preserving the remaining forest in Kenya by helping to stop illegal logging, prevent human/wildlife conflicts, which invariably results in the demise of the wildlife and of course controlling poaching of some of the most endangered species such as Black Rhino, Elephant and Bongo.

The Event – The Rhino Charge
The Rhino Charge is an extreme 4x4 vehicle event somewhere in the Kenyan Bush in which the team has to visit 13 checkpoints in less than 10 hours in whichever order the team deems will give it the best chance of winning. In order to win the team has to cover the shortest distance of all the 65 cars in the charge.

Speed has no place in this event. In order to complete the event in the shortest possible distance and win, the team ends up crossing rivers, rocks and impossible obstacles, manhandle their vehicle over ground where no vehicle should go, winch the vehicle up and down shear cliffs, hurdle down slopes where brakes have no effect. You get bruises in places you didn’t imagine possible and certainly never want again but in the end there is no rush like it.

If you want to know more about the event itself please visit www.rhinocharge.co.ke

Car 64’s 2016 team
The team this year is will unfortunately be without its strongman Hans "Winch" Herluf-Pedersen but will see the return of Mbabu, Al, Andrew and Peter. There will be two new faces in the team who are yet to be chosen from the candidates wanting to get in to the team.

The car is receiving some much needed loving care at the moment with a total overhaul of the engine and replacement of half shafts as well as making sure it conforms to any new rules the organisers have come up with. This could be our year and we say this every year but maybe, just maybe this year will finally be the year that Car 64 finishes in the top 3.

Something about each team member:
Al "The Bush": He might be limey but he has proved that he is a handy guy to have around, if for no other reason than the entertainment value. STATS: 40, 5'8', 78kg (we hope), blond, blue eyes.

Mbabu “Legs” Muturi: Mbabu has participated in the charge for 10 years but the last four years with Car 64 has made him realised that he had never done a real Charge. Two Gauntlet trophies in three years is not bad but now he is suddenly hungry for the "real" thing. STATS: 45, 6'5",95kg, curly, brown eyes.

Andrew "Handy Man" Stanley: If something on the car is not working Andrew is your man, if only he could stop screaming with excitement. STATS: 43, 5'9", 75kg, grey, brown eyes.

Peter “The Transporter” Bonde Nielsen: The man who is the blood line of Car 64. A true fighter who will tackle anything put in front of him. What ever it takes – Peter will find a way. STATS: 50, 6'3", 89kg, crew cut, brown eyes.

That is the end of our ramble. We hope that you have been inspired to donate generously!! We will do our utmost to make sure that we do better than last year. One year at a time and we will eventually get there.

Thanks,
Team 64

ps. Please do not hesitate to encourage/force your friends, family, co-workers, anyone you know to also donate generously!!!
