Story
On December 7th 2014 I was admitted in to hospital for an an elective induction. I was induced and started contacting within 15 minutes. From that point my baby's life was put in to complete jeopardy and the result of his outcome ended in utter tragedy.
Casey was my second child and like my first I experienced growth problems. I was routinely scanned and on several occasions I had Doppler scan's. This coloured scan allows the sonographer to detect Vasa Praevia, but on each occasion nothing was picked up. From 28 weeks I mentioned to my midwife that I was spotting, she never referred me for this, but on the final occasion that she referred me for another growth scan I decided to inform the hospital. The outcome of this was I was sent home with my induction date in 2 days time.
From the moment my contractions started my baby was in distress and I suffered bleeding. Instead the midwife ignored my baby's pleas and he was left several hours suffering before they had to rush me to theatre for an emergency c section. Before being rushed to theatre a junior doctor could feel blood vessels, but called for a more senior opinion. These Blood vessel are what are known as Vasa Praevia. VP occurs when one or more of the baby's placental or umbilical blood vessels cross the entrance to the birth canal beneath the baby. The senior doctor was adement she could not feel these blood vessels and decided to break my waters to speed up my labour. This resulted in my baby suffering serious blood loss.
Casey died three days later.
The really tragic part of this condition is that undiagnosed there is almost 100% infant fatality but when diagnosed 100% survival. Diagnosis is both simple and cheap through use of ultrasound scanning but despite this health care professionals are reluctant to routinely scan for it.
Just 3 weeks ago I received a letter from the NHS admitting causation in to Casey's death. I have been thinking of doing something in his memory for a while now, and since recieving an offer of settlement outside of court I want to honour his memory.
I have decided to do a skydive because this is something that will really take me guts to do. I'm going to petrified, but I want something that is really going to push me. The skydive will cost me £250, so I'm setting a target of £500. I would be beyond grateful for anyone wanting to donate.
