Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am raising money for the Evelina Children's Hospital, part of Guys and St Thomas'. Funds will be specifically directed to support metabolic conditions, including research and the acquisition of facilities to support the families of patients who are dependent on their services.

Our metabolism, what we often refer to when discussing body weight, is something we so often take for granted. I’m sure you’ve never considered the immense amount of conditions that could make such a vital bodily process so complicated. Here’s an example: a genetic mutation that disallows your urea cycle (a function of the liver) from discharging all the excess protein from your body, which consequently accumulates within you and poisons your systems. Let’s bring this into perspective: we have over 25,000 genes in our DNA… the simple mutation of one of these could have catastrophic implications. There are many such unusual and shocking conditions that we do not come across everyday – and for that matter, even once in a lifetime. If it wasn’t for the first-hand encounter I recently had with a dear loved one, I’d never have been exposed to a world in which each drop of milk consumed needs to be calculated to a T – at the risk of a protein overdose and neurological impact.

I am extremely thankful for all the care we have received through the NHS to date. There is, however, tremendous scope to do so much more. This is all subject to funding. The key to diagnosing, treating, and saving the lives of those affected by these rare and traumatic conditions lies in the research and awareness of them – not to forget support for patients and their families to help them with coming to terms with such conditions and being hospitalised frequently or for long periods of time.

That's where YOU come in. As part of a team WE have set ourselves a plethora of fundraising challenges in the hope that your support will help us reach our goal to raise £50k. I’m sure you can imagine that we cannot do this without your extremely valued support. We would be most grateful if you would consider making a donation to our cause. You can either make a general donation, or simply follow us on our journey whilst we find ourselves in both challenging situations and enjoyable events to raise these funds. Please do expect to hear from me on multiple occasions as we update you about our triumphs and upcoming events.

Activities include:

Football tournament, Sky Diving, Tough Mudder Challenge, auctions at a dinner and dance, avoiding alcohol for 6 months, to name a few. Your ideas are also welcome, as is your participation!

So please keep an eye out for future successes and challenges and please make your first donation today!

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. So it’s the most efficient way to donate – saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
