Story
Independently, we were first made aware of human trafficking, through watching a film, ‘Lilya 4-ever’ (2003) by Lukas Moodysoon, a Swedish director. We were both shocked and upset by how badly some children can be treated by their own family: deserted and uncared for, vulnerable, and living in terrible poverty. The film depicts, Lilya, abandoned by her mother and her new boyfriend, in Russia as a young teenager, and left to fend for herself. She turns, perhaps inevitably, to prostitution and eventually is groomed by a young man who promises to take her away from all of that. She is taken to Sweden and abused in what had been promised to be a country of sanctuary.
We wanted to choose this charity because we both feel strongly about supporting those, particularly children, who fall victim to this type of abuse, which is sadly prevalent in the UK and is a dark feature of modern migration.
