In 2010 my Son Corporal Liam Riley was killed in action whilst serving on active duty in Afghanistan. He was 21 years old with so much to live for. He died trying to reach a fellow soldier who had seconds earlier been the victim of an IED. Liam posthumously received a mentioned in dispatches medal for his bravery from the Queen.
Losing Liam devastated Me and my family, As a coping method we decided to fund raise for Our injured soldiers and on his birthday 2010 we held our first Corporal Liam Riley memorial fun day which was a great success and have held one every year since to celebrate his birthday and raise funds. It has become a annual event that people in the surrounding areas look forward to every year and last year we had in excess of 2500 people who attend on the day.
To date we have raised over £88,000 since 2010 and are hoping to break the 100k mark this year!
The conflict in Afghanistan has now come to an end; sadly the help for our soldier’s recovery needs to carry on. Soldiers returned to our country still need specialist treatments for rehabilitation and stress disorders. The conflict may be over but there is still a large aftermath of consequences shouldered by our armed forces. We must support them in this recovery and let them know we have not and will not forget the sacrifices they have made for each and every one of us.
