We enable women in Africa set up businesses to help work themselves out of poverty

Story

As anyone who has ever been round our house knows, we have plenty of stuff (mostly Cheryl's!)! In place of wedding gifts, we are collecting money for a very worthy charity - the Microloan Foundation. Microloan Foundation work with women in rural Malawi and neighbouring Zambia, providing small-scale loans and training to start businesses. We were lucky enough to visit Malawi and got engaged in this beautiful country in September 2013, on Mumbo Island in Lake Malawi.

It is an amazing place with wonderful people but also the world's poorest country - access to even basic medical care is often non-existent, access to education poor (especially for women and girls) and 74% of the population live in extreme poverty. Going there reminded us of how much we have, and how very fortunate we are to have it - without visiting Malawi we probably would not be getting married this year, so we'd like to give something back.

About the charity

MicroLoan is a different kind of charity, offering hope, not handouts to impoverished women in rural sub-Saharan Africa. Our small business loans and ongoing training help move women towards financial sustainability by enabling them to set up small businesses and work their way out of poverty.
