In November 2013, I travelled to The Gambia, Africa, to follow my passion of animal health and welfare. I spent 6 months at the Gambia horse and donkey trust hospital in Sambel Kunda a small rural village near the enormous river that splits the country down the middle. The Gambia is very much a third world country with very basic living conditions and that relies on horses and donkeys for transport and farming. Education of veterinary care and animal husbandry is very limited to farmers, and there are very few veterinary clinics available, for people to seek care of their animals. The Gambia horse and donkey trust is battling to improve this, with great success, and have made a massive impact to the communities of people and animals in the surrounding area.

Over the 6 months I volunteered there, I saw and treated equines with all sorts of exotic diseases, that we don't encounter in the UK. Helped to educate farmers into how to harness their equines with the appropriate tack, especially bits. Encouraged and taught their local staff in veterinary techniques. Helped to care, treat and nurse very sick and injured horses and donkeys back to health. It was a fantastic opportunity, and opened my eyes to how people and animals live and cope in poverty. As result I hold this charity's aim close to my heart and continue to support them in their cause. 

Running a marathon is no mean feat for the average person like myself, I have put a lot effort into early morning runs before work in preparation for the event on 9th October. All the pain, sweat and tears will be worth it if I can raise money for this dedicated, hard working charity.
