Story
Steve Taverner's two lifelong passions were sport and teaching.
He was a PE teacher at Elliott School in Putney from 1972 until 1989, and Head of PE, Senior Teacher and Assistant Head at Glyn School in Epsom from 1989 until 2008. Steve also coached numerous sports teams and individuals in his lifetime, both formally and informally. Since his retirement from Glyn, he continued to work as a cover teacher and an exam moderator.
Sadly, Steve died unexpectedly in hospital on August 20th after a short illness.
He was such a strong, healthy man until only two months ago, when he was given a diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. He underwent an extreme chemotherapy regime, which managed to banish the leukaemia from his bone marrow, but unfortunately left him with damage to multiple organs and a 6 week stint in hospital.
On the Wednesday, he began feeling unwell and his spleen began to bleed. Due to his weakened state, this quickly escalated and culminated in a cardiac arrest in the early hours of the Thursday morning. This was August 20th, which was the very same day that his beloved wife Maggie had died two years earlier.
For those who want to make a donation in Steve's memory, we, his family know that he would be extremely honoured to support this worthwhile cause, reflecting his life's work.
