We are a small, UK registered charity formed to provide affordable, accessible and sustainable education for the children of Nepal, particularly those in most need.
We strive to create a safe environment where children are able to achieve their full potential in all aspects of their learning. In particular, we want them all to have the chance to achieve their School Leaving Certificate.
Specifically, we aim to improve conditions in 4 main ways:
- Building good quality, new classrooms;
- Sponsoring, training and supporting new teacherswith an emphasis on attracting more local female teachers;
- Providing gender appropriate hygiene facilities;
- With the school community, promoting long term sustainability through provision of teaching resources and ongoing training.
Our first project was in the village of Lukla, where we build two new classrooms, equipping one with 12 brand new computers and the other with handmade desks and benches. In addition, we funded two new female teachers, Mingma Chhamji Sherpa and Nima Yanzee Sherpa, through our teacher sponsorship programme. In addition to teaching the children, both Mingma and Nima have been working with the community outside school hourse by gioving them access to and training with computers too.
For our second project, we have built 8 new classrooms in a more remote village called Bakhapalam. Previously, the poor existing facilities meant that children were limited to early education before having to travel up to 2 hours in each direction to a ‘secondary’ school. During the monsoon, that route became impassable limiting further their educational opportunity. By building new and more classrooms, the school can now cater for children through their school life making a massive difference to their education opportunities. We also employ two teachers here, Mani Kumar Rai and Chhimi Sherpa from April 2012, and are about to commnce work on further two classrooms in late 2013. This will mean that the school is able to begin running as a higher level school from April 2014, giving the children at this school the oppiortunity to complete their SLC locally for the very first time.
More recently, we have built 6 new classrooms in the village of Majhgaun, replacing the old, run down school, part of their 5 year plan to improve the education for the children in their village, and allow them to provide education up to Year 8 locally.
For a relatively small amount of money, we are making a massive difference to the lives of these children. Already more than 1,000 children are benefitting from our projects, and we look forward to assisting thousands more! Please visit our website for more details of our projects and events.
