Story
A short time ago my watch and I at Kilmarnock Fire Station were introduced to a local boy named Colby Fleming, like most 10 year old boys Colby loves football, playing on the swings in the play park and going for walks with his family and pet dog. Unlike most 10 year olds though Colby suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy a horrible muscle wastage condition which progressively weakens the muscles leaving him tired and unable to walk.
The NHS have provided Colby with a wheelchair that is suitable for flat ground such as school corridors and pavements but is of little use on sand, grass, mud or uneven ground (the kind of places 10 year old boys like to play).
It is for this reason my watch and I decided to raise funds to purchase an all-terrain wheelchair for Colby which will allow him to continue to do the things he loves with his family and friends.
In order to raise the funds we are completing a number of sponsored events throughout the year including the Five Ferry Cycle Challenge, Tough Mudder, The Great North Run and both the Troon and Kilmarnock 10K road races. We also plan on having a fund raising evening with raffles and auctions later in the year. We aim to be in a position to purchase the wheelchair sometime in 2016 but as it would improve Colby's way of life so dramatically the sooner we have enough money the better.
As you can imagine this type of wheelchair is not cheap and costs thousands of pounds, I appreciate money is tight for a lot of people so I am asking anyone who can spare a few pounds to please do so.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
