Story
I'm sorry to make this so long but as you will find out a lot went wrong with me.
Hi my name is Luke Denton. On 4th August 2015 I was admitted into Barnsley hospital with dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. After about a week and multiple different test later I was moved into the intensive care unit because I was massively dehydrated, struggling to breath and diagnosed with sepsis.
Later that day I was moved to Sheffield northern general ICU and was under a bariatric surgeon because I weighed 250kg aprox 39 stone. He basically said to me if you deteriorate any further and we have to operate you will die. Luckily I didn't and after a week of being in ICU I was moved onto a normal ward where I would spend another 13 weeks.
During these 13 weeks I was unable to eat or drink anything and had to be on constant drips as well as TPN (a large bag of fluid that had all the nutrients in it that my body needed) that went directly into my veins. Eventually I was initially diagnosed with Crohn's disease and was put on a steroid which seemed to solve the problem and was discharged on 17th November 2015 and weighing about 180kg aprox 28 stone.
Unfortunately this did not solve anything and a few days later I started showing the same symptoms I had originally. I spent a further 2 months at home not eating barely drinking, throwing up etc. however this time I noticed that my legs started to tingle all the time and were feeling numb. After visiting my GP and blood test I was rushed into Barnsley hospital by ambulance on 26th August 2016. As soon as I went in again they put me straight back on drips and TPN.
After a few days of being in I saw a neurological doctor who diagnosed the leg numbness as guillain-barré syndrome which basically left my legs paralyzed and because of this I was bedridden for months. I was given the proper medication for this but but didn't know how long it would take until I would be able to walk again.
I was later transferred to Sheffield northern general where I was put under the care of a bowel surgeon. First meeting him he said that he didn't think it was Crohn's and that it was diverticulitis, medicine cannot fix this and that they would need to operate. I still had a few months to wait before I was operated on and during this time they found out that parts of my bowels had stuck to each other as well as my bladder which made the opperation more difficult, but with me loosing so much weight through not eating my chances of surviving surgery were greatly increased.
I had my opperation on 4th may 2016 but unfortunately they were not able to confirm diverticulitis before it and I had to have a colostomy bag. During the opperation the surgeon told me that they drained 6 liters of fluid out of my bowls and he had no idea how I made it this long like that.Thankfully there were no post surgery complications and while I was recovering from the surgery I was also getting the use of my legs back thanks to the treatment for guillain-barré. After about 6 weeks of Physio therapy I was discharged from hospital 16th June 2016 weighing 130kg aprox 20 stone.
Now I get to the point of this campaign. My surgeon said that my colostomy bag is reversible but I would have to loose around 40kg before he would opperate on me. So I am doing it as a sponsored weight loss to raise awareness of my multiple illness's as well as raise money for a worthy cause. I am currently still not great on my legs so it is mostly healthy eating but when my legs start to get stronger I will able to do more exercise and increasing my weight loss.
Once again I'm sorry to make this so long but a lot happened in that 10 months.
