FACT: 99% of horses end their lives prematurely in the slaughter house - only 1% of horses live out their days in a loving home.
Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary was set up by our Founder Lyn Friel in 1996. She recognised that horses were one of the most abused species in our society, yet there was nowhere for them to go in N. Ireland once they had become 'surplus to requirement'. As soon as they stop winning or making money they end up descending through the world of horse dealers....their monetary value diminishes rapidly & their standard of care gets poorer until they are either abandoned or sold for their meat price. There is an estimated 40,000 abandoned horses across the island of Ireland as a whole - last year 27,000 went for slaughter.....that's FOUR times more than England, Scotland and Wales slaughter numbers combined.
Crosskennan is all the horses in N. Ireland have - they receive NO government funding and therefore rely on public donations to continue to rescue N. Ireland's unwanted horses. Every day Crosskennan has to deal with emergency calls to help the escalating numbers of abandoned, abused and neglected horses. Without Crosskennan, there will be NOWHERE to help these horses in their hour of need.
