In aid of our organ appeal, Croydon Minster is hosting a Hymnathon on 1st/2nd July this year, when we will be singing our way non-stop through the entire New English Hymnal in the wonderful venue of Croydon Minster.
Our organ appeal is working to restore the celebrated 1869 William Hill instrument to fully working condition. Only about 60% of the organ now functions after 40 years without refurbishment and, should we lose it altogether, Croydon risks losing (possibly for ever) its most significant choral training establishment for young people.
The event starts at 2pm on Friday 1st July with hymns sung by young people from across Croydon and continues right through the night up until a gala, songs of praise style concert at 7pm on Saturday 2nd July.
To make the event a success we need your help! Whether you sponsor a choir member, or perhaps a particular hymn, or even just vote for your favourite hymn so that it makes it into our top 10 show down (you can do that at ...), every penny counts and helps ensure we can continue to provide high quality music in the heart of Croydon.
Perhaps you like hymns yourself, in which case why not come along and sing for a bit? We are inviting choirs from across Surrey and London of every size and ability and of all faiths or none to participate in our 30-hour fund-raising event. Participants do not need to be of performance standard, they just need a desire to share in the joy of singing in such an awe-inspiring building for such a good cause. Will you come and join us in singing for our organ and, by obtaining sponsorship for individual choir members, for your choir as a whole or for particular hymns (perhaps in memory of friends and family), help us restore our precious and much-loved instrument? (We’ll supply the sponsorship forms.)
Calling all night owls and larks: Just imagine the unique atmosphere in beautiful surroundings of Croydon Minster late at night or in the early hours of the morning, times when few have been privileged to be there. Why not choose to join us singing in the small hours?
