Story
In 2010 I was badly burnt after being set on fire during a Chemistry experiment at school, two weeks before sitting my GCSE's. I was left with flash burns to my face and neck, badly burnt hair and third degree burns on my leg after my school skirt melted to it. I spent months back and forth from the doctors and different hospitals, treating the burns, infections that started tracking up my leg and trying to find a solution to the significant scaring I was left with. After two years of recovery I finally became a burns survivor, my hair will never grow back in places, I'll always have scars and I've been left with no feeling in part of my leg. However, I was lucky.
My experiences taught me that the support for children and young people is next to nothing. I had to learn the hard way how to adjust to the stares, comments and stigma attached to scarring. I knew I was different but with the support of my family and friends I learnt how to deal with this and not let it have an impact on me, yes I was burnt but it was't going to stop me! I am proud to say that besides being a little wary around campfires my experiences haven't had the life changing effects that they do for many young people in the same situation.
The Children's Burn Foundation is a charity based in Manchester who support young people who have suffered burns or scalds in childhood. One way they do this is by running a Burns Camp. This week long camp gives children an opportunity to have an adventure, be outdoors and carry out activities such as climbing and canoeing, as well as offering support and helping give children the skills to cope with their new situation and live a full and active life.
I have decided to raise money for this charity as I am passionate about the outdoors and think that the work this charity does to help children with burns and scalds is fantastic. I am giving up alcohol for a year (with the exception of a toast at my Nannas wake) and am completing the Great North Swim.
Thank you so much for your support :)
