Drowning Prevention Week is the annual campaign run by the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS UK), the drowning prevention charity.
One person drowns every 20 hours in the UK and hundreds more suffer life changing injuries through near drowning.
By spreading water safety advice far and wide, Drowning Prevention Week aims to teach people how to stay safe near water as well as raising funds for the charity's drowning prevention work.
North Sea Volunteer Lifeguards and Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade are teaming up to raise awareness of the issue by having a fundraising day on Saturday 25th June.
The day will begin with a Sponsored Perry Walk-a walk which runs the route of the public perry buoys located at various points along the North Tyneside Coast to Tynemouth. The event ends at the TVLB Watch House & Museum, Spanish Battery-Tynemouth.
Completing the walk will be the NSVL Rookie Lifeguards, some aged as young as eight, the NSVL Instructors & Beach Lifeguards, Members of the TVLB Rescue Team (in full water rescue gear to add to the challenge!), and associated family and friends.
To raise further funds, the walk will be followed by a raffle and cake sale.
The walk aims to not only raise awareness of the Drowning Prevention Campaign and the tragedies and near misses that have happened on our very own stretch of coast, but also to raise vital funds for these two vital lifesaving charities (both operated entirely by volunteers), as well as the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS).
