Roddy Scott was an incredibly brave Journalist who died reporting on the Russian-Chechen war in 2002. The Roddy Scott Foundation was opened in his name in 2007 and today teaches over 200 children with a mission statement to improve English language skills and develop skills in IT. Uniquely an online journal written by children for children operates as a direct result of IT skill acquisition.
I have visited Pankisi Valley on several occasions and in previous years prior to working for the RSF worked with a local Surgeon to develop the local medical infrastructure. Through collaboration with a UK based Charity, we developed a 20 bedded clinic in Akhmeta in 2007 which ran for four years and provided low cost surgical care to the local populace in a district of 40,000 people. Equipment was provided by the charity and amongst various things enabled the surgeon to provide an ultrasound clinic at a central hub. In Pankisi village, to my great personal satisfaction, I saw the setting up of a dental clinic in Duisi which runs today and provides affordable treatment for the locals. The success of this made me realise the very real achievements that collaborations can bring with local partners.
My vision for the future is for educational exchanges to be facilitated between the Republic of Georgia and the UK for Surgical colleagues. My own specialty of plastic and reconstructive can offer Georgia a raft of cutting edge reconstructive techniques and I believe an exchange will be of great mutual benefit. That there are many refugees in Pankisi is testament to war, of which Georgia has also had recent experience. There are many people in considerable need of life changing surgeries.
I believe strongly in constructive affirmative action and to me this means promoting and supporting the values of civil life. The twin pillars of this are health and education. I have had some success in this field and I see a brighter future for Pankisi valley with your support to aid us to help them help themselves to work to that future.
Yours sincerely
