Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit this JustGiving page set up in memory of Dan Bourne, Dorking RFC Colts rugby coach who sadly passed away on the 12th January, shortly after training.
Dan was a fixture on the sidelines at Dorking and having helped coach
several of our Colts groups to success he was delighted like us all to see
so many go on to swell the ranks of the senior sides and 1st XV.
He was, it is fair to say, rugby mad. The popular Brummie was a Leicester
Tigers fan, but had lived and worked in the south for many years and became
by default a regular Harlequins supporter.
But it was during weekends at the Big Field he was probably happiest,
coaching or chewing the fat on the touchline or in the bar over a Guinness.
Or preferably several.
DRFC Press Officer Paul Mosley, part of the National U17 Cup-winning side's
coaching group with Dan in 2012, said: "His death has been a real blow. He
had many friends at the club. A great many of our young adult players know
him and when he died the new crop of U17 Colts were just getting to know him
better."
Dan was a level-two qualified coach and helped Dorking's 2009 Colts to win
the tough Surrey U18 Division One and a couple of years later he was part of
the set up that saw Dorking beat Moseley to win the National U17 Cup at
Worcester in a pulsating final.
Mosley added: "Dan helped coach Paul Hunt and Gavin Leathem's talented group
to win the Surrey U18 League with players such as Tom Hunt and Charlie
Pankhurst, but after that he was clearly at a loose end and we were pleased
when he came in to help our group who were running two sides. He was a good
mentor to the lads and always encouraging.
"He knew what he was talking about on the field and off the field he was a
lovely man - full of kindness, generosity and wit.
"He was quite a character and on the Sunday he died, from a heart attack
brought on by an undiagnosed heart condition, the Colts had been entertained
by his attempt to coach then in brand new white boots.
