In July 2015 I became Uncle to a little superstar called Luke. Now a year old, he is a little character, who can clap hands, high five and get into the mischief most other 1 year olds do, Luke also has Down's Syndrome.
Being unexpectedly born with Down's Syndrome, Luke was quite poorly immediately after birth and was dependent on oxygen for the first 6 months of his life. Having Down Syndrome doesn't effect Luke's ability to do anything, it just makes his journey a little longer than others.
Down Syndrome North East is run completely by volunteers, they provide help and support to people with Down Syndrome of all ages and their family and friends. They offer help and advice to parents and carers and organise local events.
When I look at Luke I really don't see the Down Syndrome I just see Luke. I am running the Great North Run to help raise funds for DSNE but to also raise awareness and help people see what I see when I look at Luke.
