Story
In January I lost my grandad, who had suffered from general ill health for a few years, after a sudden deterioration mainly due to pneumonia. In his last few months he visited Vista on a weekly basis, who helped to improve his quality of life. Those visits where he played games, interacted with people and enjoyed organised day trips made a genuine difference to his mood and also helped to alleviate some of the pressure on my gran (although she never moaned) to care for him.
Vista is a wonderful charity, who are independent and are often overlooked. They are a charity with a long and renowned history of supporting people with sight loss from across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and remain the main provider of services to blind and partially sighted people across the three localities.
I have met a handful of people from the charity, from the marketing department to fundraisers and carers, and they are all an inspiration. My company, Soar Media, also supports Vista through the provision of PR, to help to raise the charity's profile in the region and we are very proud to be known as one of their partners.
I will complete this trek of the Great Wall of China with my girlfriend, Sarah Bailey, who is fundraising for the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund in memory of her father who passed away in April 2011.
For anyone who knows us both, we have never done anything like this before, but it honestly felt like the only way to do something right for two people we loved so much and two wonderful charities.
We all lead busy lives and it will be a challenge for us to find the time to train for this and then to actually trek the 38 miles across the Great Wall of China, over 6 days, trekking for an average of 6-8 hours a day, across steep inclines on a difficult terrain, all at high altitude.
To complete this challenge is the least we can do for those we've lost and for those less fortunate than us, who need a little support. I've donated to charities in the past, as we all do, but I've never really done enough, not nearly enough, but with your help and kind donations, I hope to make a difference however small it is.
My grandad struggled with his vision, his balance and as a result, his confidence. Vista helped to put a spring in his step, and during those last few months he never stopped talking about how kind they were to him, and how much he enjoyed his day trips. If this challenge allows me to help just one person in a similar position to my grandad, then it will all have been worthwhile.
I miss my grandad everyday, but I know that by completing this challenge in his memory, he would have been proud of me and being the generous, thoughtful and humble person he was, he would love to know that other people will get the help and enjoyment he received.
Wish me, and Sarah luck, and please, if you can, donate as much as you can afford.
