Tonight and nearly every night, somewhere in North Northumberland a family will be waiting anxiously for a Hospice at Home carer to knock on their door .... 

On May 1st last year, George was persuaded that it was no longer safe for him to climb the stairs to bed and so he very reluctantly moved into a hospital bed downstairs, he was hardly able to walk let alone climb the stairs!  We slept on sofas and zed beds in the room with George so he was never alone and so we could hear him call for us and we could hear him .... just breathing! It was suggested that Hospice at Home should send someone to sit through the night so that we could get some rest. I remember the first night the carer came, I think it was about 5th May, I was anxious, I was exhausted, I was afraid. This lovely lady firstly quietly reassured George that all was well, she sat and gently talked to him, she promised me that she would wake us if she was concerned, she allowed us to sleep. The following night we had a different lady, she too was just wonderful, she soothed and reassured us and we knew George was in safe hands.  These two people shared with us the most difficult, emotional and at times frightening, nights of our lives and they had such a calm and gentle manner even in the most distressing situations. They came into our lives for just 10 nights but they will never, ever be forgotten.

 Hospice Care North Northumberland deserves far more than I can ever raise but tonight and every night somebody somewhere will be blessed by the presence of these lovely caring people. Thank you Alnwick Hospice Care - for everything.
