Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page for 2010 Virgin London Marathon
I have been lucky enough to secure a place for the Virgin London Marathon taking place on Sunday 25 April 2010. The race is going to be a challenge, but I’m going to give all to the end and hopefully have the chance to meet Richard Branson himself who will be running the marathon.
I have always wanted to run the London Marathon ever since I came to the UK from Kenya. One question that people always ask is Why Are Kenyans Fast Runners?
Many have suggested that while growing up in Kenya children are aided by the fact we all run several miles to and from school! Am not sure this has made me a good runner though.
Running is culturally important in Kenya, in a way that all major sports are anywhere else in the world and many young Kenyans view distance running as a ticket out of poverty especially when many don't have a lot of other sports to be drawn into.
Having grown up in Kenya and having first hand experience of poverty has given me the incentive and drive to try and help those less fortunate. I will be running to raise money for Out of Afrika, a charity founded in The UK that works at grass roots level with communities in Kenya to promote education to orphans and disadvantaged children with the goal of increasing self-sufficiency and bringing about long term sustainability.
About The London Marathon
The world-famous London Marathon, newly sponsored by Virgin in 2010, takes you past iconic London landmarks including the Tower of London and the Houses of Parliament, finishing at Buckingham Palace. The overwhelming support from the crowds lining the route is sure to keep me going throughout the 26.2 miles.
