Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!

Dave (my husband) has talked about doing this climb on and off over the years and we decided that this would be the year to finally take on this once in a lifetime challenge and adventure together!

Thank-you so much for helping us to help MS Research to make a real difference!

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is not a hereditary condition, but having someone in your direct family with MS increases your risk of developing it too.

So, I am desperate to raise funds for MS Research to help everyone with MS; AND members of my own close family; AND also to try to ensure that there is help, treatment (and maybe even a cure one day) should I or my son become one of the statistics above. Having watched Progressive MS slowly but surely take almost everything from someone I love dearly, and now facing the prospect of watching someone else I love more than anything go through the same thing, it is also terrifying to contemplate dealing with it myself or watching my son go through it.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a condition that doesn’t give those with the disease a day off. It is the most common cause of disability in young people and once diagnosed will affect the rest of a person’s life. This means an adult life-time of battling against symptoms like muscle weakness often with loss of mobility, fatigue, tremor, bladder and bowel problems, sensory problems, difficulty walking and visual impairment.

To understand the disease and search for solutions research needs to be equally relentless. With effective research we can solve problems, deliver better treatments or contribute to finding the information we need for a cure. 'MS Research, Treatment & Education' is funded entirely by donations which go towards “looking forward to seeing the back of MS”.

(We are raising money for 2 charities so please visit Dave’s page too and help us both reach our targets.)

Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain on the African continent and the highest free-standing mountain in the world, an impressive 5895m above sea level. Although we are climbing Kilimanjaro, the mountain within the National Park, there are actually three volcanoes that form Kilimanjaro. It is Uhuru Peak on the volcano of Kibo that marks the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa.

We are trekking the Lemosho route, starting in the rainforest and reaching the summit at dawn 7 days later (hopefully!) Almost every kind of ecological system is found on the mountain: cultivated land, rain forest, heath, moorland, alpine desert and an arctic summit. We’ll go from hot & humid at the start to well below freezing in the final days – this will be a real challenge!

Altitude sickness is very likely, but the medic on our trip will be keeping a close eye on everyone to make sure our symptoms aren’t too serious and we don’t push ourselves further than is safe.
